Think of the streets of NYC, and then imagine 20 people per square mile and 7,000 acres of forever-wild forest in the peaceful valley where Jewett sits along the Eastkill Creek. Black Dome, Thomas Cole and Blackhead, three of the tallest mountains in the Catskills, guard the town. It’s simply paradise. You’ve got to love Jewett’s Town Comprehensive Plan goals: “A clean, healthy and sustainable natural environment; good roads; an open, responsive, and competent town government; small businesses consistent with the rural character of Jewett; a diversity of housing available to all income levels and ages; a friendly, neighborly community with high community involvement and spirit; a mix of ages and income levels as residents; quality public services and amenities; a community that integrates primary and secondary homeowners; a small but active agricultural base that contributes to the economy.” Doesn’t that say it all? Another delight is the town dog webpage; your best friend is extremely welcome in Jewett—provided s/he’s licensed! Homes in the area range from ornate Victorians to glass-walled contemporaries, with prices from $249k into the millions.
Everyone and anyone might be found in the pristine surroundings of Jewett. People escaping the city, people who’ve lived here all their lives, people who’ve just bought a house and are getting to know the area. Congratulate them on leaving all that traffic behind!
If you want a bit of excitement and a bite to eat or something to drink, ride up the hill to Windham for the beautiful old homes and pretty businesses on Main Street. Have a glass of the best and a chat with the sommelier at the relaxed Ze Wine Bar. Pick up some soppresatta and pecorino romano at Todaros Salumeria. Browse the hand-made clothes, jewelry and pottery at European Crafts. In a restored 1830s building, feast your eyes on bolts and bolts of gorgeous fabric at The Patchwork Co. In Hensonville you’ll want to visit Vesuvio and talk with Joe about his homemade ravioli.
Jewett is a lovely place, the peaceful center of all that goes on around it. Lots of skiers make their home-base in Jewett for its proximity to Hunter and Windham mountains, but it’s not just in the winter that those mountain resorts and Jewett are desirable. The Catskills are perhaps best-known worldwide for spectacular foliage, and Jewett is a perfect place to see it. All year-round, hikers and bikers, cyclists and motocyclists, equestrians and joggers make the most of the rugged and relaxing paths and byways of Jewett. Colgate Lake Wild Forest’s 1,500 acres is a world in itself for swimming, paddling or fishing and camping in the cool forest. An inspiring, hand-built local landmark is the Grazhda Music and Arts Center and its classical concert series and folk art classes. Or take a class in ceramics or fiber arts at Sugar Maples. Head west for a hike up Pratt Rock, visit to the Zadock Pratt Museum and a coffee and hand-baked pastry at Prattsville Art Center. Or take an easy drive east of Windham to see the spectacular view from the five-state lookout.
