The Quiet Side of Catskill

Welcome to Palenville

Called “the first art colony in America” because of its popularity with Thomas Cole and other Hudson River School painters, the Catskill Mountains hamlet of Palenville has lost none of its drama. Palenville sits at the entrance to the Kaaterskill Clove, an awe-inspiring cleft created over a million years by the Kaaterskill Creek. To this day you’ll find people climbing up and down and through it in all seasons and weathers. Palenville homes run from pine-clad cabins in the woods to stone castles and everything in between and range from $149k to $2.2 million.

People & Lifestyle

Palenville is a perfect spot for anyone looking to live in a quiet neighborhood but near main roads that lead to all amenities. It’s a hamlet in the Town of Catskill but has none of the small town hustle and bustle associated with Catskill. People living in Palenville enjoy the serenity of the woods and the streams, meet at the library for classes and workshops, golf at the local club, volunteer at the arts council or take to the hills on their bikes.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

When you come down the mountain you’ll find the Circle W Market and good coffee, fresh foods and groceries, locally made baked goods and cool Catskills items for sale. Nearby Creekside Adornings is the site of a large array of Catskills-inspired fused glass jewelry, fiber arts and embroidery. Drop in at one of the last of the 1800s boarding houses, the long-standing Woodbine Inn, for a drink in the Prohibition Era bar, or try the fare at Rip Van Winkle Country Club after a round of golf. If you want to get to know the locals, check out Irish Kevin’s Pub North and the Riviera at Catskill Mountain Lodge, which is right on the creek, by the way. “Downtown” Saugerties, Woodstock and Catskill are only about 10 miles away—in different directions—and there’s plenty of shopping, dining and entertainment there.

Things to Do

An outdoor paradise, that’s Palenville, full of swimming holes, hiking trails and, most popularly, the Kaaterskill Clove and Kaaterskill Falls in the Kaaterskill Wild Forest. For rainy days, check out a book or movie from the Palenville branch of the Catskill Library or take to the road, because from Palenville you go up through the clove to skiing or a performance in Hunter or Windham, an art class in Prattsville or down the mountain to Woodstock for the Sunday drum circle. Head east to where the Catskill Creek meets the Hudson for a bite at Frank Guido’s Port of Call. Then cross the Rip Van Winkle Bridge for antiquing in Hudson; or head further north for the river view and some Mexican food in Stuyvesant and the beautiful historic homes in Kinderhook.
